What do you do before going to bed?

The activities we do before we go to bed determine how easily we fall asleep. Eduard Estivill, medical specialist for sleep medicine, states that, during the two hours prior to bedtime, it is important to disconnect our phones and computers, don't perform any intense physical exercise and avoid eating.

Paying continuous attention to our smartphone screen prevents us from relaxing. If we’re also getting work messages and emails all the time, the stress escalates exponentially. At the end,we end up roaming in bed, thinking about next day’s plans or that difficult project we have to finish.

Going to the gym or running shortly before going to bed isn’t a good idea either. Although physical activity is actually tiring and helps us sleep better, we need to space it enough before we go to bed. Otherwise, falling asleep will be more difficult

Last but not least, it is very important to have a light and early dinner. Bare in mind that digesting a heavy meal will make relaxing almost impossible. Besides, body temperature raises during digestion, which is the opposite to what happens when we fall asleep. That means the two processes are totally incompatible.

In a nutshell, if we want to sleep like a baby we should take the last couple of hours before going to bed to read, listen to the radio, watch TV or have a walk.
