How many calories do we normally burn?
Knowing how many calories we burn in a normal day can be very useful if we want to lose weight and therefore eat accordingly with the consumed calories.
Traditional calorie-counting methods
One option to keep track of the number of calories we burn on a normal day is just doing the maths: you mentally make up the calories burned. For guidance, we can tell you how many calories burn different activities:
- 30 minutes of aerobic – 178 kcal
- 30 minutes of cycling – 150 kcal
- 30 minutes of power walking – 150 kcal
- 30 minutes of housework – 75 to 125 kcal
- 30 minutes driving – 50 kcal
- 30 minutes of running – 300 kcal
- 30 minutes of sedentary work – 50 kcal
- 30 minutes watching TV – 50 kcal
- 8 hours sleeping – 600 kcal
Now grab a pen and some paper and do the maths: 8 hours of sleep, 8 hours working, 1 hour walking, 1 hour doing housework and 2 hours watching TV would make a total 1925 kcal. You surely do a lot of different activities each day, so our tip is to write them down during the week and use that as a reference for your daily intake.
Not without my phone: calorie-counting apps
There are apps to do your tie or love calculators so… of course there’s calorie counting apps out there! Obviously there’s a bunch of calorie calculators in the market for both iOS and Android. A great one is MyFitnesPal, which helps you lose weight calculating your food intake and burnt calories. However, you’ll have to pay for it, but if you have some time you can give Runtastic a try or browse the Play Store to find what’s the best app for you.
Smartwatches: everything on your wrist
If the number of calories burned does not obsess you and you just want to get a rough idea, you can go for a Geeksme GME1 smartwatch, which automatically calculates the calories consumed in different activities. This is a very easy way to check the calories you brun at a glance and having the watch on can give you a pretty clear idea of how many calories you are burning according to your way of life. In addition, this type of watch have other super interesting modes to monitor other aspects of your life.
Do I lose wheight in my sleep?
Although there’s no evidence for the exact number of calories burned in our sleep, some say that sleeping for eight hours equals running 60 minutes. If you want to know how many calories you burn at night you have to do a direct calorimetry, which consists of “measuring” the calories we give off, a rather complicated procedure that we do not recommend. On average we burn 600 calories during a 8-hour sleep, although it depends on whether you are male or female, how much muscle you have, if you suffer from stress, if you have performed some physical exercise during the day, your weight…
Burning calories without obsessing about it
Spending the day counting calories can be exhausting, so we recommend that you don’t let it become an obsession. Vigorexia or obsession with the perfect body is an eating disorder as dangerous as anorexia or bulimia. It’s okay to try to stay in shape, eat a balanced diet or do some exercise, but we can’t lose it. Something good, like counting the calories you burn to control your weight or improve your health, can become a headache if you take it to the edge. Surely you also know people who weigh food and follow strict diets despite not having health problems and being thin. Having an approximate idea of the caloric content of foods is interesting, but don’t push it. Life is made to enjoy and not to count calories.
Anyways, if you have an overweight problem, it is best for you to go to a nutritionist or endocrinologist to find out the diet that best suits you instead of doing experiments! And if you want to drop a couple of kilos, adopt healthy habits, eat in a balanced way and do some exercise … your body will thank you!
